Vinyl flooring is becoming one of the best flooring choices in most modern houses and even in commercial places. For those who are not familiar with vinyl flooring,we need short to tell:vinyl flooring are manufactured with material that mimics the appearance of natural materials while also providing practical features that suit modern lives.

In this section, we will discuss the types of damage that can be found on vinyl flooring. Although most vinyl flooring are well known for their resistance against a variety of damages and challenges, they can still become damaged when continuously exposed to unfavorable environments. These damages can also be caused by improper installation and poor maintenance practices. Below, we will explore the various types of damages that can affect not only vinyl floors but also other types of flooring such as hardwood, concrete, ceramic tiles, and vinyl flooring as well.

1.Scratches and scuffs

Scratches are very common challenge to many vinyl flooring, they are usually caused by heavy furniture, pet claws, abrasive materials. Even if vinyl flooring are designed to withstand scratches, they can get damaged due to extreme conditions. Some suppliers have super anti scratch UV coating process. If surface damage happened, people will use DIY method like a mixture of baking soda and water to gently rub out surface scratches. But one of the best practice is to consistently apply thin layer of vinyl floor polish to restore the shine everyday.


2.Gouges and tears

If you are not careful enough, Sharp objects or even dropping heavy items onto your vinyl flooring may cause some gouges and tears on the surface. Although some damage may be reversible, this may result in permanent damage if proper maintenance is not practiced.

Fortunately in most cases they don’t get permanent damage. By using a repair kit for vinyl floors, you can find material to fill in the damaged area with filler and then level it. 3.Water damage

It’s quite interesting to note that, although many vinyl flooring are waterproof to water damage. However, excessive water exposure to the floors like water floods for example. They can still cause heavy damage to your vinyl flooring especially if the flooring has an underlayment or padding underneath the vinyl, you have to remove the flooring and replace the padding or even the vinyl flooring affected section. Water damage won’t directly damage the flooring because vinyl floor planks and tiles are waterproof. So the effect or damage is mostly done to the padding or underlayment. If water gets underneath the floor area, they will develop moist problems that may result in a complete removal or replacement of the floor. We will further discuss on how to replace damaged floors in the last section of this article.



4.Warping and cupping

Vinyl flooring don’t get warping and cupping easily as compared to materials like wood especially if they are installed correctly. However they can still be affected by these issues, especially if the installation was not done correctly or if there are underlying moisture problems.



How To Repair Vinyl Plank Flooring


Replacing vinyl plank flooring is a straight forward process that requires basic tools. However, it has to be done by professional team as it may get complicated depending on the installation pattern. For example, it is very hard to replace a damaged SPC herringbone installation pattern than grid pattern. So we recommend that you hire a person with good experience when replacing damage vinyl plank.

They are two types of vinyl join types, the click joint and non-click joins. This is very important to note because it also determine the method to use when replacing LVT planks. Let’s look first on how to replace vinyl planks that uses the non-click joins. Example: Glue down, Peel & stick

Tools needed to repair damaged plank
  • Replacement vinyl planks
  • Utility knife or vinyl plank cutter
  • Straightedge or ruler
  • Hairdryer or heat gun
  • Putty knife or scraper
  • Adhesive or double-sided tape (if needed)
  • Measuring tape
  • Marker or pencil
Replacing non-click join planks

Steps: 1

First, remove the damaged plank by heating it with a hairdryer or heat gun and then prying it up with a putty knife.

Step: 2

Cut the replacement plank to fit using a utility knife or cutter.

Step: 3

Apply adhesive or double-sided tape to the back of the replacement plank.

Step: 4

Press the replacement plank into place, ensuring it is aligned with the surrounding planks.

Step: 5

Use a straightedge or ruler to ensure a smooth fit.

Replacing vinyl flooring planks with click-join
  1. Cut along the“X” with the circular sa in the damaged piece.
  2. Cut throught the bottom of the plank.
  3. Move the long side piece form adjecent planks.
  4. Move the rest part of damaged piece without destroy the click of adjecent planks.
  5. Clean out the opening to ensure there is none debris.
  6. Prepare the new one by cutting off the top tongue.
  7. Remove the small locking nub from the top side groove.
  8. Cut the bottom right corner of the grooves at 45 degree angle.
  9. Apply adhesive to the insttlaed pkanks on the exposured groove and new plank groove.
  10. Slide the right side at anangle under the adgacent plank
  11. Make sure the right side is in rotate the plank.
  12. Tap the left side with rubber hammer.
  13. Check the new piece plank installation workable or not.
  14. Clean the replacement area.
